The ReStore: Household treasures, hiding in plain sight

This is the story of how Judy and I replaced several major kitchen appliances and re-did our dining room – all for less than $350.

The Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in Carver is a bargain hunter’s paradise.

When our $1,200 GE Advantium Convection/Microwave Oven gave up the ghost after ten years of faithful service we replaced it with another GE Advantium oven built in 2007.

The Profile Convection/Microwave Oven we purchased was in brand new condition and appeared to have been rarely if ever used. It was donated to the restore by a homeowner remodeling his kitchen. The item sold new for about $1,350 and was on sale at the ReStore for $85.

A few months later our automatic dishwasher fell apart. We had bought the dishwasher for around $450. The replacement we got at the restore was a better make and model and we purchased it for only $50.

At roughly the same time we spotted a bargain – a complete dining room set of tables and chairs for a bit less than $200.  As a kicker we also purchased a kitchen wall cabinet for $15.

Dining room table and matching chairs –  $200 GE Profile Advantium Convection/Microwave Oven – $85

GE Dishwasher – $50

Kitchen wall cabinet – $15

Bargains like these are not exceptional. They can be found every day at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Carver. Judy and I serve as volunteers on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth and we also serve on the ReStore Committee.

The Habitat ReStore is a non-profit business venture supporting the community. The Carver ReStore resells overstocked, discontinued, “new” and used merchandise, donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals at 50-90% off retail . Proceeds from the sales help fund building local Habitat for Humanity homes.

The store is open to the public, anyone can buy items at discounted prices. Materials sold at ReStores are donated by individuals, construction companies, contractors, and building supply stores.

ReStores provide a three-way winning situation:

  • Tons of building materials are diverted from landfills
  • New, or gently used, home improvement supplies can be bought by the public at a fraction of their original cost
  • Profits from the sales are used in building Habitat for Humanity homes

NOTE: Inventory changes frequently since new items are received weekly, sometimes daily. Some of the items you will find at the Carver ReStore include: doors, windows, kitchen cabinets, paint, plumbing and electrical items, light fixtures, and tile.
